A violent gravitational event, not necessarily a black hole, but something along those lines.

I left it fairly abstract, done with a lot of help from Photoshop filters and my favourite. After Effects and some of its plug-ins. A combination of painting, manipulated photo bashing for some nebula textures, and a ton of filters.
